2242 was completed in November 1950 to Diagram D133, Lot 1744 to a design by FW Hawksworth produced by the GWR in 1944. Construction was at Metro-Cammell in Birmingham. It is a large Brake Third to complement Thirds 829 and 2119 with distinctive domed roof ends and 64 feet long. After initial use on express services it was retired from cross country routes in January 1966 when it was converted to a staff coach.
It was purchased from Cardiff Cathays by the late Dennis Howells in 1982. A painstaking restoration followed at Quainton Road in Buckinghamshire. The Association acquired the carriage in 2019 with plans to complete the restoration before service on the Valley.
