9103 Restoration - 2005
Details of the ongoing restoration work throughout 2005.
Previous restoration progress at:
|
December 2005 |
A new pattern set has been made for casting new door bump
stops and cast successfully. (4 at a time). The original part shown
would be mounted on the door. A pattern for the matching piece, mounted
on the body, is nearing completion.
|
|
|
Work continues to fit out the lavatories. Here the cast base is located over the original mounting holes in the south end compartment.
|
|
Another base with brass collar, studs and flapper valve installed. |
October 2005 |
The double sliding door to the Guard's Brake has been grained and vanished ready for installation. The two toilet doors are also being prepared for fitting.
|
|
Corner cappings have been made. Barney and Don are fitting them on the south end.
|
The sliding door locks have been set up so now shut with a satisfying clunk!
|
|
Work continues on the interior, these are fittings for the sliding doors, and an upholstery fitter is preparing an estimate and seeking the
manufacture of seat cages. |
Fourteen new droplights have been manufactured. |
|
Mick, Barney and Don offer up one of the rebuilt door frames for a trial fit.

March and April 2005 |
- Installation of the corridor compartment sliding doors and work begun to overhaul the handles for which new springs will need to be made
- Graining completed on sections of corridor behind the sliding doors. We are concerned about damaging the window side graining as everyone walked in and out so have been left for the time being
- Preparation of the new droplights in progress
- Preparation of the double door to the Guard's compartment ready for graining
- More machining of the parts for the toilets - see below
- Begun cleaning and etch priming the exterior on the west side - see below
- The new castings for the table legs have been made and collected - see below
|
Table Legs - April 2005 |
Colin Jenkins and Phil James recently went down to Wells
to collect the six table legs for the saloons. As you can see, the foundry is not a large one and sits
on the edge, quite literally, of one of the Foster Yeomans
quarries. Along with the table legs we also picked up the
rest of the brass luggage rack brackets for 650.

Machining - April 2005 |
Pete Simpson has been busy machining the castings for
the toilets. In the lathe is one of the brass toilet bases
and below are two of the finished toilet flush valves.

are being applied. Work also continues on cleaning and stripping
the accessible parts of the bogies.
