Details of our ongoing restoration work throughout 2010. The previous years restoration progress can be viewed at:

December 2010 |
8th December saw 9103 moved temporarily to Kidderminster so that it can be put on spare 7 foot ‘accommodation’ bogies whilst its own are overhauled. The extremely cold weather complicated the move - many thanks to every who helped out!
9103 waiting its turn...
..then the fun begins - heat and bars to release the frozen point work...
...but more work as everything is frozen solid...
...past the gas bottle...
...a pause on the way up to Kidderminster as the sun goes down on a long day... |
|
...'Silver Spoon' shuts the back road after traveling down from Kidderminster with the LNER Coach Fund's latest acquisition in tow...
...the 9103 is freed...
...9103 is moved out of the yard...
...and marshaled up on the main line...
...tucked up in Kidderminster works, its home for the next few months while the bogies are overhauled.
With the bogies now at Kidderminster we are assisting with their overhaul during the week and continue with the bodywork on Saturdays. Working parties at Kidderminster will be on Wednesdays or Thursdays. If you have days off in the week and would like to help please contact Mick Haynes on 07733 310060.
Many thanks to Tim Davis and Richard Hill for the photos.

The west side (the river side, so usually out of view) is now in Chocolate and Cream undercoat to match the east side. The commode handle have also been attached to the Guard's door.

|
With the gangway ends painted and hung the internal curved end sliding doors are being fitted in the South end...
...and North.
|
October 2010 |
Other than final painting, the two new blank gangway ends are now complete.

September 2010 |
A few images showing the progress on 9103 during September.
The corridor poles fitted. This completes the work on the corridor!!
One of the two new blank gangway ends which have been made to the original GW drawings and will be fitted to protect the end sliding doors.

|
The west side which is almost ready to receive the first coat of chocolate and cream undercoat.
The toilet pans have been trial fitted together with the seats. The photos show the south and north ends respectively. |
July 2010 |
Good progress down the west side - we have now completed 5 out of the 7 doors and are over half way along the side applying filler.
A view down the corridor where the scumbling is complete apart from the double doors.
One of the brass ends for the corridor hand rails - highly polished! |
|
The toilet flaps are now in position and working as is the toilet valve. This took a lot of detailed work setting up, synchronising the toilet to flush, open the flap and close with a measured amount of water! Not so easy but thanks to Pete Simpson now mastered.
The completed washbasin plumbing in the north end toilet.
A Peep Behind the Scenes
See 9103 firsthand at the 4150 Fund's 'A Peep Behind the Scenes' weekend, August 7th & 8th 2010. Further details from 4150.org.uk.

June 2010 |
Dave and Rob continuing with the finishing painting on the East side - now in second undercoat after a bit more filler. Barney is on the photo as usual!
Work has commenced on Collett Full Brake 98 - owned by the 813 Fund but now used by GW(SVR)A. The double doors in the worst condition have been removed and are being rebuilt. The photo shows the first door frame with new stiles now in place and a proud Shaun Parsons admiring his handiwork! |
|
The west side of 9103 where we have already completed 1/3 of the way and 3 out of the 7 doors - very good progress.
Inside Keith and Peter are getting on well with the plumbing of the toilets and washbasins.
|
May 2010 |
The first chocolate and cream undercoat has been applied on the eastside - now for more filling and flatting!
A new working platform courtesy of the LNER Coach Fund has now been moved to the west side and work begun to re-bed the doors and make the final fit.
The corridor handrails have been machined and will now be fitted. The plumbing of the toilets is also progressing.
Before too long the coach will move temporarily to Kidderminster for lifting and bogie swop. We will then need to work in two locations: at Kidderminster dismantling, cleaning and painting the bogies - this will be mid-week and working party dates will be advertised on this site if you would like to come and help, while at Bewdley we will continue with the west side doors on Saturdays.

April 2010 |
We have had a cold, snowy winter which has made progress difficult. We have concentrated on the east side doors making sure they work all open and shut smoothly, individually adjusting each lock and strike plate. The cold, damp weather has had an affect - doors which opened smoothly in the summer began to stick again! So these have taken some regular adjusting to open and close smoothly again.
Meanwhile Harry has painted and grained the south end toilet and constructed two GW style end boards from original drawings. These wait their final fittings and canvas before we can install them, this needs to be done to keep the weather out before the curved end sliding doors can be finally fitted. Further filling and flatting of the coach side has also been carried out. Keith has finished the piping runs for the water tank fillers and tested for leaks.
The other major job has been to carry out a major tidy of Full Brake 98 with everything stored and labeled to ensure it can be found easily.
